My Survey Creation

One of the questions I ask myself throughout the school year is, “How can I increase the level of intrinsic motivation in my students?” I have so many students that are simply looking for a passing grade, with some of them showing a drastic decrease in effort once they’ve locked in a C or higher for a marking period. Their goals are based on performance instead of growth and accomplishment, and I find some students using whatever means necessary when put under pressure. This typically presents itself as using the internet or a special phone app to do the work for them or getting the answers from someone else. I wanted to hear what other educators are experiencing when it comes to this, so I made this survey.

My original format for my survey was going to be through Google Forms, since I’ve used it in the past. Instead, I used Qualtrics because I believe that this software allows me to have more control over the formatting and style my questions could take. As I was making my survey, my biggest challenge was creating questions that sounded like they came from a place of curiosity and growth. My goal was for whoever took the survey to feel as if they were offering observations and experiences instead of being questioned and judged for what they may or may not do. It took me many rewrites to get the wording correct and morph many of the “how” questions I tend to ask into “what” questions. Overall, I enjoyed digging deep into discovering what questions I wanted to ask, and my genuine interest in the topic has me excited to see what data I gather from other educators in response to this issue that I believe impacts many of us.
