Making a Sketchnote Video

Note taking has always been an area that I overlooked. For my entire career as a student, notes have mostly consisted of writing down what I was supposed to and never looking at it again. I have countless notebooks that have the first 10-20 pages meticulously filled out, but has the rest of the pages left entirely blank. I feel as though I’m going to miss a tidbit of important information while my focus is on writing down what I was just given. To avoid this, I would just avoid notes and turn all of my attention to the presentation to make sure I was able to hear every last detail.

Using a sketchnote style video was a great experience. I feel that this type of activity is something that I can work to incorporate into my own classroom with my students. It gave me a purpose to reexamine my thinking and understanding of past content and dig deeper into it. Where before I would take my notes at face value and move on, taking the time to analyze them allowed me to connect more meaning to them and see how everything works together to compliment the bigger picture. This style of connecting with the content would benefit my math students tremendously, in my opinion. I can see my students almost seeing it as putting together the pieces of a puzzle to unlock the inner-workings of whatever concept that we are learning. I don’t think that it was difficult to set up, and that there are endless ways to impart your own personality into how it is represented. The most challenging part is testing and being able to verbalize your own understanding.
